Photo Album

I’ve always loved looking at people’s photographs, so here are a few of my favorites. I also often name characters after people I know, so you can see some of the real-life namesakes of my characters from My So-Called Family and later books.

  • Mom and me in 1977.
  • With my dad and my new baby sister, 1980.
  • In the backyard of our pink house. For some reason, Mom and I are in matching outfits.
  • In California with my dad in 1986, right before I moved to New York.
  • Lighting the candles at my bat mitzah. My sister is looking on in the background, May 1990.
  • Summer 2000 with two of my favorite people, Lily (left) and Marachel, the daughters of my childhood baby-sitter (we took this picture in the supermarket).
  • My friend Arielle, my sister and me, bowling in New York City to benefit the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, October 2005.
  • me, Amy, Lindsay and Melissa.
  • With my grandmother, my dad and my sister, May 2006.
  • Marachel reading an early version of MY SO-CALLED FAMILY and Lily reading someone else's book, in April 2007.
  • With my friend, Jake. His mom started the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.
  • Jennie, me, Courtney and Morgan.
  • My arms full with my friend Lindsay's twins, Chase (left) and Avery.
  • Andrew, Zach, me and Nicki, September 2008
  • At the party for the release of MY SO-CALLED FAMILY, with my friends and fellow writers N.A. Nelson, Daphne Grab and Rebecca Stead, October 2008
  • Joined by friends at Books of Wonder, one of my favorite bookstores. From the left, Arielle, me, Katie and Courtney, November 2008
  • Celebrating IanMichael’s bar mitzvah with my mom, sister, brother-in-law and our extended “faux” family, December 2008
  • Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin generously wrote a quote for the POSITIVELY book jacket.  Here we are at a reading for her captivating memoir, April 2009
  • Singer Jessarae (far left) and actor Steven R. McQueen. Dec 2009.
  • One of my favorite pictures with two of my favorite people, Suncica and Laura, part of my "faux" family.
  • In January of 2010, I read from POSITIVELY at Housing Works Bookstore, alongside my dear friend and fellow author Regan Hofmann.  Here, Project Runway contestant Jack Mackenroth (Season 4) introduces us.
  • On our way to the Teen Author Carnival, Gayle Forman and I passed a wall of flowers that was so pretty, we stopped to take a picture.
  • THE BEAUTIFUL BETWEEN (by Alyssa) and SINCERELY (by me).
  • That's my godson Brody on my lap, while his big bro Madden reads aloud the manuscript for my first young reader's book, STELLA BATTS NEEDS A NEW NAME.  (Much to my mother's chagrin, I had just dyed my hair dark brown.)
  • January 2011, my nephew Zach joins Wendy Mass and me at our reading in Lancaster, PA.
  • Lauren Oliver and I mark Passover 2011 by joining the "Twitterhood of the Butt-Lifting Pajants," meaning we wore and then decorated a pair of pajama jeans that are being passed through the kid lit community. Confused?  You can read all about the pajants at http://courtneywrites.livejournal.com/107908.html (26 of 26)
  • Writers Night Out!  From the left, Sarah Mlynowski, Adele Griffin & I get all dressed up to go to the movies, August 2011
